Fall Oregon Engagement Photos | Mount Pisgah Arboretum

If you’ve been around here for a minute, you might remember E+T’s surprise proposal at Falls Creek Falls (if not, you can read that story here; it’s a good one). Getting to photograph their Oregon engagement photos after capturing that once-in-a-lifetime moment was the kind of full-circle story that really makes me appreciate that I get to do this as my job. I love getting the opportunity to document more than just one milestone. It’s about continuity and telling a story, from a surprise proposal to wedding season loading.

For their engagement session, we started at a waterfall that already meant something to them. It’s where they used to hang out when they first started dating. Oregon truly showed up for these two. It was peak fall, the kind where the oranges are so bright they almost look fake. If you could bottle that kind of autumn magic, you’d sell out immediately. At the waterfall, we wandered wooded and leaf covered paths before heading off to a nearby covered bridge, which is just iconic Oregon.

After starting at their dating-day waterfall, a quick stop at an iconic local covered bridge, we then headed over to Mount Pisgah Arboretum for the next chapter of these Oregon engagement photos, and it did not disappoint.

Mount Pisgah offers beautiful views and open meadows. When you plan a longer engagement session (which we absolutely did here), you actually have time to use it all. We wandered the meadows before finishing up at their wedding venue for this summer. A champagne pop to celebrate a wonderful day spent and a toast to their upcoming big day. That’s storytelling. Starting at a place that shaped their early relationship and ending at the place where they’ll say their vows.

This is one of the reasons I gently nudge couples toward longer sessions when it makes sense. Not because you need a zillion photos. But because time creates space for outfit changes, different locations, and the nerves to settle and personalities to come through.

Why Longer Engagement Sessions Are a Must

Something I care about a lot is time. Specifically, giving your engagement photos enough of it. E+T’s session is the perfect example of how longer sessions give you the variety, depth, and a completely different experience.

Because we weren’t rushed, we were able to hit three different locations with different energies. Three chapters of their story, all in one session. Longer sessions also allow for outfit changes, which subtly shift the tone of your photos. I love giving your gallery dimension.

And something people don’t talk about enough is that it takes time to relax in front of a camera. Even the most confident couples need a minute to shake off that initial “What do I do with my hands?” energy. When we’re not rushing, there’s space for that transition.

I take my work seriously. The lighting, composition, and storytelling all matter deeply to me. But I also want your session to feel like an experience you genuinely enjoy, not a task you power through before dinner reservations. When you give yourself time, the photos feel better.

Hey friends—I’m Mattie. Portland-based, forever chasing that golden light, and very much in my element wherever mossy trails and bright fall leaves are involved. But my goal is always the same: tell your story in a way that feels natural, grounded, and completely you.

If this feels like your kind of energy, I’d love to connect and start dreaming up your session. And if you’re in the mood for more Oregon magic, go check out this Hoyt Arboretum Wedding!
