J and M’s Cannon Beach wedding started in the dreamiest way possible—standing on the shoreline at sunrise with the people they love most. These two traveled all the way from the East Coast for an intimate wedding experience, and Cannon Beach delivered.
If you’ve ever been to the Oregon Coast, you know the weather can be a little unpredictable. (And by “a little,” I mean you can experience sunshine, fog, wind, rain, and emotional damage within the same hour.) But somehow, J+M lucked out with one of the clearest, sunniest mornings. The entire beach was glowing with the softest golden light, creating a backdrop that couples dream about when planning an Oregon Coast elopement.
One of the biggest reasons they chose a sunrise ceremony was for the privacy and intimacy it brings. Cannon Beach is iconic for a reason, but that also means it can get crowded fast later in the day. Starting early meant they had quiet stretches of beach almost completely to themselves. Surrounded by a small group of loved ones, J+M exchanged vows with the sound of the ocean behind them and the coolest morning air rolling in off the water. It was the perfect reminder that sometimes the best wedding days are the ones that start barefoot on the beach before most people have even had their coffee.

Exploring Cannon Beach as Newlyweds
After their ceremony wrapped up, J+M got to do one of the best parts of planning an intimate wedding day, which is to enjoy it. They spent the rest of the morning exploring Cannon Beach with their favorite people and fully soaking in every second together.
Their portraits near Haystack Rock were especially beautiful as the sun climbed higher over the beach. The soft golden light mixed with the stillness of the morning created the dreamiest atmosphere, and the reflections across the sand made everything feel extra magical.
They later shared:
“I am not exaggerating in any way when I say Mattie’s photos were the reasons why we wanted to get married in Oregon. When we had the opportunity to meet with her, it just solidified our decision. Mattie was amazing, very kind, helpful, and just helped create our exact vision and more for our elopement. My family was in awe of our sneak peeks, and I just can’t thank her enough. Her husband is awesome too!! 🙂 If you are looking for something unique, breathtakingly beautiful Oregon is your place, and Mattie is the woman you need behind the lens!!! Thank you for making our perfect wedding day come true.”
Cue me trying not to cry behind the camera.
These two wanted a wedding experience that felt personal, adventurous, and true to who they are together. And after spending the morning with them on the beach, it was so obvious how much heart they poured into creating a day that actually reflected their relationship. That’s the magic of intimate weddings on the Oregon Coast. You get the space to slow down, be present, and create memories that feel like you with some incredibly beautiful scenery thrown in as a bonus.

Why Sunrise Elopements Are So Worth It
J+M’s wedding day was the perfect example of why sunrise elopements at Cannon Beach are so incredibly worth the early wake-up call. Sure, getting ready before the sun comes up is a little humbling at first, but the second you step onto an almost empty beach with the sky starting to glow? Immediate redemption arc.
One of the biggest advantages of planning a sunrise wedding on the Oregon Coast is the privacy. Cannon Beach is an icon in Oregon for a reason, which also means afternoons can get busy. Choosing sunrise gives couples the chance to experience places like Haystack Rock. Instead of navigating crowds, you get a peaceful shoreline, uninterrupted portraits, and space to be present without eyes on you.
The lighting is also unreal and creates a unique sentiment in your gallery, given that most people aren’t waking up that early for wedding photos. Of course, Oregon Coast weather can always be unpredictable, and you truly never know what you’re going to get out here. Sometimes it’s moody fog and dramatic waves, sometimes it’s sunshine and golden light, and sometimes it’s both within twenty minutes because Oregon likes to stay mysterious. No matter the situation, your photos will look like a dream.
I’ll never stop recommending sunrise ceremonies at Cannon Beach after days like this one. Even if it does mean my alarm clock and I are temporarily enemies.
