M and P’s moody engagement photos at Ecola State Park were giving all the Twilight vibes, and I mean that in the best way. Low clouds, mist rolling over the coastline, a little rain, and two people who were completely down to embrace whatever the Oregon Coast had planned for us. Which, honestly, could have been just about anything.
Although M and P are originally from the East Coast, they’ve fallen hard for the Pacific Northwest. They love spending time outdoors and wanted their engagement photos to reflect that part of their relationship. Naturally, Ecola State Park was the perfect fit. We had plenty to work with: dramatic ocean views, dense forests, and rugged beaches.
The only thing we couldn’t quite plan for? The weather. Shocking, I know. We showed up not knowing whether we’d be dealing with strong winds, a full-on downpour, or a bit of both. Rather than risk getting caught in the worst of it, we moved our timeline earlier to give ourselves some breathing room. That way, if we needed to wait out the rain, we could do so without feeling rushed.
We started at the Ecola State Park viewpoint, overlooking the ocean and sea stacks stretching along the coastline. If you look closely at some of the photos, you can actually see raindrops falling around them. The clouds hung low over the water, and everything had a soft, muted look I love about the Oregon Coast. Not exactly sunny engagement photo weather, but I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

From Fern-Filled Forests to Moody Engagement Photos on Indian Beach
One of my favorite things about Ecola State Park is the variety without having to drive all over the place. After the viewpoint, we headed down the forest road, trading ocean views for towering evergreens, moss-covered branches, and ferns everywhere. And you know I’m never passing up a good PNW forest moment.
The darker forest light was perfect for the moody engagement photos we were going for. M and P wandered down the road, tucked themselves into the ferns, and spent time wrapped up together. I love giving couples a little direction and then letting them do their thing. Some of my favorite photos happen when they’re paying more attention to each other than me.
Our final stop was Indian Beach, which you might recognize as La Push from Twilight. Yes, THAT beach. Between the fog, sea stacks, and gray skies, we were basically in our own PNW movie scene.
We walked along the wet sand, played near the water, and leaned into the moodiness. M even had ambitious photo ideas involving the Pacific Ocean in September. As if the freezing water wasn’t enough!
Afterward, they shared the sweetest review:
“Cannot say enough incredible things about Mattie & Before Our Eyes! We had so much fun at our shoot, and the photos are, of course, absolutely unbelievable.
She captured both the drama of the coast and the beautiful tiny details – and was happy to indulge my ambitious shot ideas (into the Pacific Ocean in September?!). A joy to work with from start to finish.”
That part about capturing the drama and tiny details means a lot. I want couples to have beautiful landscape photos, but also remember the little interactions that make their relationship theirs. M and P’s Cannon Beach engagement photos captured exactly what they love about the outdoors.

And if you’re worried about what happens when the forecast calls for rain, well, M and P’s session is a pretty good example of why you don’t need to panic.
I’m Mattie, a PNW photographer who loves helping couples plan engagement sessions that feel like an experience rather than an hour of awkwardly wondering how to pose.
