If you’re dreaming about how to elope in Alaska but also don’t want to spend half your day figuring out bush planes, logistics, or how to survive in the actual wilderness… I’ve got you. Anchorage is kind of the sweet spot where wild, untouched Alaska meets “okay cool, we still have access to coffee and a real road.”

This area delivers everything people imagine when they think of Alaska, like jagged mountains, alpine lakes, glaciers, and ocean views, without requiring a full expedition to get there. The best part is you don’t need to go deep into the backcountry to get those jaw-dropping views. Within just a couple of hours of Anchorage, you can be standing somewhere that feels completely remote, exchanging vows with nothing but mountains as your witnesses.

This is especially perfect for:

  • Couples who want adventure without complicated logistics
  • People who love the idea of hiking… or at least like the aesthetic of it, but still want options
  • Anyone who wants a mix of epic scenery and a relaxed, meaningful experience

Basically, whether you’re the “let’s hike to an alpine lake at sunrise” type or the “I will absolutely cry if I have to hike uphill in wedding attire” type, you have options. And that’s exactly what this guide is about: the most beautiful, experience-driven places to elope, all within a short drive of Anchorage, so you can focus less on planning stress and more on enjoying your day (as you should).

Hatcher Pass

If you told me I could only photograph elopements in one area near Anchorage for the rest of time… Hatcher Pass would be very high on my list (and I don’t say that lightly). This place is ridiculously beautiful. What makes Hatcher Pass really special, though, is the flexibility. It works for so many different types of couples.

If you’re into hiking, there are some incredible alpine lakes you can hike to that feel super secluded and intimate. If hiking isn’t your thing (or you don’t want to sweat before your vows), there are stunning lakes with no hiking access that are just as great. You still get the views, the water, the whole vibe, without the uphill climb. Zero judgment here.

Want to level it up a little? Kayaking on one of the lakes is such a fun way to make your day feel more like an experience.

Why couples love it:

  • Huge variety of scenery in one location
  • Options for both adventurous and more relaxed timelines
  • That lush, green, almost dreamlike Alaska feel

A quick heads up (because I care about you):
The weather can change fast. Like, sunshine → moody fog → sunshine again, all in one afternoon. It’s part of the charm, but we’ll always build in flexibility so you’re not stressed if Alaska decides to be… Alaska.

Flattop Mountain Area

Just outside of Anchorage, this spot is kind of the overachiever of elopement locations. With minimal drive time and maximum payoff, you get sweeping mountain views, lush green hills in the summer, and wildflowers! What makes this area so great is the accessibility, variety of trails and viewpoints, and the unreal views overlooking Anchorage, especially at sunset.

For the hikers, my favorite spot in the Flattop area is a short and sweet hike that gives you 360 degree views from the valley. It’s not a long trek, but it will get your heart rate up on the way back (consider it part of the experience) and because we aren’t in a hurry, we can take all the stops we need. More photo ops tbh.

Why couples love it:

  • Easy logistics (which means less stress, more enjoyment of your day)
  • Perfect for sunrise or sunset ceremonies
  • Great option if you want epic views but also want to keep things simple

This is a popular area, so timing matters. Early mornings or later evenings are where the magic (and the privacy) really happens. Plus, the light is chef’s kiss.

Matanuska Glacier

If you want your elopement to feel like a full experience, Matanuska Glacier is where things get really fun. This glacier is massive, easily accessible from Anchorage, and covered in those wild blue ice textures that don’t even look real.

Here’s how you can experience it:

Option 1: Guided glacier hike
You’ll head out with a guide, strap on crampons, and explore the glacier safely. It’s adventurous, super memorable, and still very doable for most couples.

Option 2: Helicopter drop-off (my personal favorite)
If you really want that private, once-in-a-lifetime kind of day, this is it. You’ll fly out, land somewhere remote on the glacier, and have space to wander, explore, and actually take it all in without other people around.

Truthfully, the difference in experience is huge. The heli option gives you way more privacy, more freedom to explore, and a much more personal, intentional feel.

Why couples love it:

  • It’s wildly unique (not your typical mountain elopement)
  • Feels like an adventure you’ll actually remember
  • The photos are next-level (blue ice + textures for days)

Glaciers are cold. I know, shocking. Bring layers and hand warmers, and maybe don’t choose the most delicate, airy outfit, unless you’re okay with being a little chilly for the aesthetic.

Seward

If you’re reading this thinking, “Okay, but what if we want everything?” Seward is your answer. It gives you that perfect mix of ocean, mountains, and glaciers all in one place. It feels like a full destination elopement without actually having to go that far. The vibe here is slower, more intentional, a little coastal-cozy.

One of my favorite spots here is Salted Roots. You can see H+T’s Alaska elopement at Salted Roots Cabins here!

  • Cozy, aesthetic cabins
  • Tucked away feel without being inaccessible
  • And the real star: a private beach for your ceremony

Want to turn your elopement into an experience? (You absolutely should.)

Seward makes it easy to build a day, or a few days, that feel unforgettable:

  • Helicopter + iceberg paddling experience
→ You get flown out and paddle near actual icebergs… which is just as cool as it sounds
  • Kenai Fjords National Park wildlife cruise
→ Glaciers, whales, sea otters, puffins—the whole Alaska experience

Why couples love it:

  • Ocean + mountains + glaciers all in one spot
  • Built-in activities
  • Perfect for stretching your elopement into a multi-day experience

Give yourself extra time here. At least 1–2 days if you can swing it. Seward isn’t a “rush in, rush out” kind of place.

How to Get Legally Married in Alaska (The Easy Version)

Let’s take a quick pause from the dreamy locations and talk about the one slightly less glamorous part—making it official. Don’t worry, though, Alaska actually keeps this pretty simple (we love that for you).

Here’s how it works:

  • You’ll apply for a marriage license through the State of Alaska
  • There’s a 3-day waiting period
  • The license is valid for 90 days

What you’ll need:

  • A valid ID
  • Two witnesses
  • An officiant (pssttt- I’m ordained!!)

One of the best things about choosing to elope in Alaska is how straightforward the legal side is.

You can apply and find all the official details here: Alaska marriage license info

Don’t leave this for the last minute. It’s easy, but it’s still paperwork, and paperwork has a way of becoming stressful if you ignore it until the day before. Handle this part early, and then you can fully focus on the fun stuff… like standing on a glacier or next to the ocean, marrying your person.

Alaska Elopement Photographer | Before Our Eyes Photography

If you’ve made it this far, there’s a solid chance you’re at least thinking about how to elope in Alaska, and as your fellow Alaska elopement photographer, I support it.

Here’s something I don’t always put out there publicly: I travel a lot, but I don’t always post exactly where I’ll be ahead of time. So if you’re planning to elope in Alaska, it’s always worth reaching out, even if you’re still just exploring options. If I’m already anticipating being in the area, I won’t add any additional travel fees to my packages. Yep. We love a strategic life decision.

And beyond that, I’m here to help you build a day that feels like you. So if you’re dreaming about mountains, glaciers, ocean views, or just a day that feels a little more you and a little less traditional… let’s talk.
