If you’ve ever tried to plan Cannon Beach maternity photos in early spring, you know it can be a bit of a gamble due to moody skies, wind, and chilly temps. So when H+E’s session landed on one of those calm, golden April evenings, it felt like the coast was doing us a solid.
We kept things easy right from the start as H+E just walked the shoreline together with their pup, soaking it all in. Their dog was fully living its best life, weaving in and out of frames like a pro. Honestly, I’m convinced every session should come with a built-in hype dog.
There’s a reason I love starting sessions this way. Movement creates connection. It gets people out of their heads and into the moment with real interaction, the kind of stuff you can’t fake even if you tried. By the time we eased into more intentional maternity moments, they were completely relaxed, which makes all the difference.

Transitioning into Couples Beach Maternity Photos
Once we had officially warmed up (thanks to a solid combo of golden light and a very good dog), we eased into the more intimate side of H+E’s Cannon Beach maternity photos. This is usually where things shift a bit. It’s like turning the volume down so the quieter, more connected moments can come through.
Golden hour was doing its thing. We leaned into that by slowing things down with gentle movement and closeness. The beach itself really showed up for us, too. You got those wet sand reflections, soft waves rolling in, and Haystack Rock anchoring everything in the background.
Having already photographed their Mount Rainier engagement session made a huge difference here. They didn’t need to figure out how to be in front of the camera; we’d already done that part. So instead of thinking about what to do, they could just be. And that’s always the goal.

Solo Portraits + Slowing It All Down
As the sun dipped lower, we carved out some time for just H. This is always one of my favorite parts of a maternity session. After all the walking and laughing, it’s a nice reset. The light was wrapping around H, catching movement in her skirt and the warmth in her pretty red hair, and we kept things simple.
We also mixed in some black and white here, which felt like the right call. Stripping away the color always lets the emotion take center stage. It’s timeless, a little more raw, and it gives these images a different kind of weight.
By the end of it, the light had that deeper golden tone that only lasts for a few minutes, and we fully leaned in. The weather, location, and energy fully aligned this day. Perfect for H+E on the edge of a really big, really beautiful next chapter.
